New Arrest Warrant Issued for Ex-Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Over Contempt Case

In a recent development, a new arrest warrant has been issued for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The warrant comes in relation to a contempt case linked to the top electoral body.

Islamabad : Imran Khan, who faced numerous charges in different institutions and courts since his ouster, including graft, murder, and sedition, has been summoned multiple times by the ECP for the contempt case. However, his persistent absence from the hearings has irked the commission, leading to the issuance of the non-bailable arrest warrant.

The ECP initiated the contempt proceedings against Imran Khan and two former PTI leaders, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry, last year, accusing them of using "intemperate" language against the chief election commissioner and the electoral watchdog. While Umar was spared from the arrest warrant, Khan and Chaudhry are required to appear before the commission on July 25.

Despite being served notices and bailable warrants earlier this year, Imran Khan failed to comply with the commission's orders. His legal team challenged the notices and contempt proceedings in higher courts, but the Supreme Court eventually allowed the ECP to proceed with the case and frame charges against the accused.

This is one of the many legal challenges that Imran Khan has been facing since his removal from power in April of the previous year. The former PTI leader, Fawad Chaudhry, who was once a staunch supporter of Khan, recently tendered an apology to the ECP in his contempt case.

In a separate case involving the murder of senior lawyer Abdul Razzaq Shar in Quetta, the Supreme Court barred authorities from arresting Imran Khan until August 9.

The situation remains tense as Imran Khan's legal battles continue to unfold in different courts across Pakistan.
